Is My Washing Machine Off Balance?

    by Product Specialist

Is my washing machine off balance?

All washing machines make noise, typically a steady hum that our ears have grown accustomed to. However, occasionally a washing machine is so loud and uneven you might wonder if there’s something wrong with your appliance. If your washing machine is excessively shaking and/or is making irregular noises, it’s most likely off balance or in need of service.

Once you’ve realized your machine is off balance, there are measures you can take to fix it:

    Overloaded Machine

If the load of laundry in the washing machine is too large, it can cause the machine to become off balance. If a load is lopsided or completely filling the machine, the washer drum may move unevenly and bang against the outer tub. If this is happening, you will hear an uneven thud as the washer basket hits the outer component of the washing machine. Open the machine and make sure it is evenly loaded; take out items if necessary. Close the lid and resume the cycle.

    Badly Leveled Legs

If your washing machine is not sitting level on the floor, a load of laundry can cause loud noises as the machine tips back and forth, similar to a table with uneven legs. If the machine is not sitting on a level surface, with all 4 legs firmly on the ground, it can cause the washing machine to be off balance. If your machine is self-leveling you can simply tilt the machine forward and set it back down. If your machine is not self-leveling, you can adjust the legs yourself with a level and a wrench. If your washing machine is sitting on a pedestal, it may be that the pedestal is not sturdy enough or not level itself. Check the pedestal leveling legs and make sure the body is not flexing. Check your owner’s manual or installation guide for complete and specific instructions on how to level your machine.

    Shipping Bolts Still Inside

Is your washing machine brand new and making a lot of noise? Check to see if the shipping bolts have been removed. Open the washing machine door and press the bottom edge of the stainless-steel basket inside, while firmly applying pressure. If the washing basket moves slightly downward and springs back on its own, then the original shipping bolts have been removed. However, if there is no flexibility to your basket, the shipping bolts may still be installed and need to be taken out.

Lastly, if none of these tips fix your noisy washing machine, it could be that some internal parts are damaged or in need of repair.
